Calico M-950 - 100 round capacity 9mm

Calico M-950 Liberty III 9mm Automatic Pistol with 100-round magazine

Calico Light Weapon Systems introduced the Calico series of firearms with their unique helical magazines back in the early 90’s. The design is very distinct, with a helical magazine mounted above the action feeding either 50 or 100 rounds from above with the ejection port being directly in front of the trigger guard, ejecting the casings downwards. The M-950 Liberty III is a 9mm automatic pistol with a 6″ barrel and an overall length of 14 inches with the 50-round magazine, or 19 inches as shown here with the 100-round magazine. This picture also has a brass-catcher in place under the ejection port. The M-950 was also available in the M-960 variant which included a select-fire mode, making it a machine pistol or light carbine with an impressive magazine size.

It sure is a cool concept, but I understand that many of the Calico firearms have jamming problems both with feeding and ejecting from the helican magazine. Considering the semi-unavailable nature of the firearm (typically by availability and price), it seems that actually doing a test fire on one might not be easy.

Do any owners have comments about the reliability of the Calico firearms?

I just bought one and it works like a charm. You have to wind the drum properley.

yea the M950 is AWESOME and does not jam as long as you load it correctly and know what you are doing. This is not for beginners or rookies.

You do not know what you are talking about Mr. “and does not jam as long as you load it correctly and know what you are doing”!! Let’s see, all you have to do is place the round in the magazine 50-100 times( they will only feed one way) depending on the type of mag and then wind it to specs. Then you just take the safety off and pull the trigger. HOW FREAKIN DIFFICULT IS THAT? If that is in fact too difficult, then I guess one would not even have the sense to be able to fill out the form to obtain the weapon, let alone have the sense to walk out the door of his or her home.

I don’t have the M-950 I have a M-100. Yeah it’s only a .22 lr and even with it I don’t have really much of a problem with it. It’s rather heavy when fully loaded though.

Earlier models had a problem with the feeding ramps, which earned it a reputation of jamming. I sent in the first calico carbine I owned, and it was fixed and sent back. Worked perfectly after that.

I bought a later model liberty III series calico pistol and it worked flawlessly. With a speed loader, I could load a 50 round clip in less then a minute, wind it up and have it back on the weapon. It fired every brand of 9mm ammo I had (9 different brands) without a single hiccup.

I had the liberty 100 w/solid butt stock . I traded it in for an M-900 w/sliding stock. I kept my 100rd mag and the only time i ever had a problem, was when i loaded 101 rounds (you kinda lose count some times loading it by hand)and the bolt would not strip the round from mag so i released the tension, took out that one round, wound the mag 23 times and problem solved. never had a problem with it ever since
