Steyr AUG A2

Steyr AUG A2 5.56mm Assault Rifle

Introduced in the early 70’s by Steyr Mannlicher of Austria, the AUG (Armee Universal Gewehr - “Universal Army Rifle”) became the standard rifle of the Austrian military in 1977, and was marketed aggressively internationally since then. (I remember the booths, sample rifles, and promotional materials at the Canadian ARMEX expositions). The AUG has been released in multiple variants in the decades since including the one above, the AUG A2. The AUG was known for being easily changed from one role to the next - with a modular design that allows it to switch from heavy-barreled light machine gun to a variety of rifle and carbine lengths, as well as a very short-barreled version for use as a 9mm or 5.56mm submachine gun.

.357 Magnum Highway Patrolman

Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum Highway Patrolman Revolver

The Smith & Wesson Model 28 “Highway Patrolman” is a six-shot .357 Magnum revolver built on the S&W N-Frame. The N-frame revolvers are one of Smith & Wesson’s heavier revolver frames, designed to handle the heavier rounds such as .38HV and .357 Magnum. The Highway Patrolman was released as the “budget” version of the Model 27 revolver, but has a majority of the same features. The Model 27 was replaced by the stainless steel Model 627, and the Model 28 is no longer being made at all.

Heckler & Koch MP5

Heckler & Koch MP-5 9mm Submachine Gun

Just got this great photo of the Heckler & Koch MP5 9mm Submachine Gun in email. Great angle, nice and clear, really shows off the design and style. This is the MP5A3 model, with the sliding stock. The MP5 is one of the most famous and easily identified submachine guns in the world, sharing the pedestal with the Israeli Uzi.

Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner

M1928 Thompson Submachine Gun - The Classic Tommy Gun

The Tommy gun earned it’s reputation in the hands of gangsters in the 1930’s - back when you could buy one, full auto, from the Sears catalog for roughly $250. The M1928 model shown here has the 100-round drum magazine and wooden furniture that made it notorious in the hands of mobsters the in prohibition and depression eras in Hollywood films. The Thompson submachine gun was originally developed as the “Annihilator”, and was originally intended to fire rifle ammunition, but the limits of the design made it so it could only be manufactured firing .45 ACP.

Today we also added two new pages to the GunPorn site.

  • The first is GunPorn on Facebook which contains instructions on how to get your daily dose of gunporn while on Facebook if you are too lazy to surf on over here - as well as how to share your favourite gunporn posts with your Facebook friends.
  • The second is Image Macros - a storage page for captioned images that somehow are appropriate to the site, but that do not suit the feel of the front page (ie: they don’t focus on pretty pictures of guns). Think of them as LOLcats, but about guns.

French Military Victories

French MAT-49 9mm Submachine Gun

The somewhat heavy and more than somewhat ugly French MAT-49 submachine gun is primarily of interest because of the folding magazine well design. The magazine well and magazine can be folded forward on the gun to rest up just under the barrel. This made the MAT-49 significantly less bulky when stowed and thus easier to carry. The MAT-49 was used by the French military from it’s introduction in 1949 until it was replaced with the FAMAS 5.56mm rifle in 1979.

Oh Lusa, I’m Home!

LUSA A2 9mm Select Fire 9mm suppressed Carbine / Submachine gun

The LUSA A2 is a select fire 9mm submachine gun that was originally developed by a Portuguese firm for use in Portugal and adopted by a few other European countries. The design was then sold to an American firm where it is being manufactured and sold today. It is sold as a semi-automatic carbine in the civilian market, and with a select-fire trigger group almost identical to the MP5 for law enforcement and government agencies. The submachine gun definitely shows it’s Heckler & Koch roots with remarked similarities to the MP5 - which should come as no surprise as the company that originally developed it was also manufacturing H&K 21 and G3 rifles under license at the time.

It’s a bird… The Grand Raptor II

Kimber Grand Raptor Custom Shop .45 1911A1

Kimber’s custom shop makes these fine 1911-styled .45s. The Kimber Grand Raptor II is a classic .45 with a beautiful two-tone coloration, scaled rosewood grips, and scaled serrations on all the gripping areas. The scaling and two-tone coloration makes the Grand Raptor II a very pretty and strikingly different piece of work.

The Mighty 500

Smith & Wesson Model 500 .500SWMagnum Revolver

It’s a big gun, firing a big round. The Model 500 is built up on the Smith & Wesson X-Frame to fire their .500 S&W Magnum round - claimed to be the most powerful handgun round commercially manufactured. The round itself was developed by Cor-Bon and S&W together for this revolver, and both were unveiled in 2003. It takes a heavy chunk of stainless to fire off five of these monster bullets.

USAS-12 Full Auto 12 gauge Assault Shotgun

December 23, 2007 6:18 am

Daewoo USAS-12 Fully Automatic 12 gauge Assault Shotgun

The USAS-12 is probably the most well-known or recognized autoshotgun in the world. Made in South Korea by Daewoo and based on the concepts of the Atchisson Assault 12 gauge, this rifle was designed to be easily usable by anyone trained with the M16. The USAS-12 is a gas-action select-fire rifle with a lot of the internals borrowed from the design of the Atchisson Assault (notably the long bolt overtravel which results in a lower, more controllable rate of fire).

Loaded with a 10-round magazine, the USAS-12 weighs in well over 12 pounds. The one shown here has a 20-round drum magazine as well as a pair (?!) of flashlights, laser sight and reflex sight.

Sidewinder Conversion on a Mossberg 12 Gauge

A few years ago, Knoxx Industries (who mostly manufacture recoil reduction hardware for rifles and shotguns) started making the Sidewinder - a kit to convert a Mossberg 500 (and a few other similar models) to be able to use either a 6 round box magazine or a 10 round drum (shown above). Unfortunately, they had issues getting the kit manufactured at their target price, and have since discontinued production and sales. This makes finding a photo of a Sidewinder-equipped Mossberg a bit of a challenge. Hats off to the AnarchAngel for his blog post about the Sidewinder shown here.
