Classic AK, but with all the black rails and toys you expect in a modern military weapon instead of the traditional wood furniture.

Something about these Taurus Model 44 Tens caught my eye. Able to fire both .45 Colt and .410 Shotshells, the 44 Ten has an oddly long-looking cylinder, especially mated to a 3 inch barrel.

The CZ 100 is Česká Zbrojovka’s entry into the polymer market. It is pretty typical of a 9mm polymer handgun with double action only and the same basic design going back to the Browning automatics. But there’s something about the look of the CZ 100 that managed to get into a lot of the fictional handgun illustrations I’ve done in the past three years.

While I wasn’t a fan of the look of the Tavor Assault Rifles when they were first unveiled by IMI (now TAAS) in 1999, I’ve found that the newer editions are much more eye-catching. These Tavor-2 rifles (based on the Micro-Tavor design) have a more traditional grip and trigger assembly as well as barrel shroud compared to the TAR-21 series. While made for the IDF, budgetary constraints have prevented these rifles from seeing action with the IDF to date (although India recently purchased a bunch of them).

The DSR-1 is an interesting and impressively accurate sniper rifle. A bullpup design to maximize barrel length while keeping the overall weapon length down, it looks unique because it has two magazine wells - one behind the pistol grip (feeding the bullpup action) and one in the more traditional location in front (which is actually storage, allowing the marksman to quickly load the second clip in by keeping it handy and on the rifle). Chambered in 7.62 NATO, .300 Winchester Magnum and .338 Lapua Magnum, the DSR-1 literature claims state sub-.2 MOA accuracy (0.20 inch / 5 mm groups measured center-to-center at 100 yards) with correct ammunition out of the box.

After the Glock 17 post, I got an email that “you can’t talk Glock without pimping the 18″. This Glock 18 pic is from Catman’s site about customizing an airsoft version of the 1911 from Hitman Contracts, and is a nice piece of work.

Not the first polymer construction handgun on the market (the H&K VP-70 has that credit), but the Glock 17 turned a lot of heads and caused a brief panic that the polymer construction would render it ‘invisible’ to metal detectors (ignoring that 80% of the mass of the gun is metal).

Continuing the story of the automatic pistol we have the Browning Hi-Power. Developed by the same man as the Colt M1911, the Browning Hi-Power was developed for a French military requirement for a gun with a 15 round magazine. This is the first major production firearm using a double-stacked 9mm magazine which leads later to the development of the Beretta 92 and other similar wonder-nines.

The Colt M1911A1 has done more to change the way the world looks at handguns than just about any other gun. Adopted by the US Army in 1911 to replace a variety of service revolvers, the short recoil design by John Browning has since become the standard for automatic pistols of the 20th Century.
