Auto-Ordnance Thompson 1927A-1 Model TA5 .45ACP Pistol

The classic Thompson 1927’s are back from Auto-Ordnance, this time being sold as a “lightweight deluxe pistol”. The TA5 sports a 10.5 inch barrel and the classic 50 round drum magazine, chambered in .45 ACP. 10 and 30 round stick magazines are available as well as the heavy-weight 100 round drum. From the specs, this looks to be a close remake of the classic Thompson in inner workings and even includes the classic walnut furniture. A very pretty piece of hardware.

Russian Bizon 9mm Helical-Feed SMG

PP-19 Bizon 9mm Submachine Gun

The PP-19 Bizon was the Russian implementation of the Calico weapon design, designed by the son of Mikhail Kalashnikov, the legendary creator of the AK-47. It uses a helical 64-round magazine mounted below the body of the weapon, and otherwise retains the standard design of the source firearms - the Kalashnikov AK-74 assault rifles. Supposedly some early models had an ammunition counter built into the magazine. The standard Bizon 2 SMG is chambered in 9mm x 18mm Makarov, but variants exist chambered in 9 x 17mm Browning Shor (.380 Automatic), 9 x 19mm Parabellum and 7.62 x 25mm Tokarev.

Walther MPK 9mm Submachine Gun

The Walther MP-series of submachine guns went in to production in Germany in 1963, and was adopted by some German police forces and the Mexican Navy. However sales were never strong and this select-fire submachine gun went out of production in 1983. The gun exists in two configurations, the MPL (Long) and MPK (Kurtz) - the only difference being in barrel length. Shown here is the Walther MPK with the folding stock extended and 32-round magazine.

.45 ACP M3 Grease Gun

January 3, 2008 6:04 am

American M3 .45 ACP “Grease Gun” Submachine Gun

The M3 “Grease Gun” replaced the M1 Thompson series of submachine guns in US Military service in time for World War II (with over 600,000 manufactured by the end of the war). Unlike the Thompsons, the M3 was designed to be easily switched to the 9mm Parabellum round used by the Allied European nations in their handguns and submachine guns, and is primarily made of metal stampings, making the entire firearm much easier and cheaper to manufacture. It is an automatic-only blowback operated submachine gun chambered in the .45 ACP round.

Heckler & Koch MP5

Heckler & Koch MP-5 9mm Submachine Gun

Just got this great photo of the Heckler & Koch MP5 9mm Submachine Gun in email. Great angle, nice and clear, really shows off the design and style. This is the MP5A3 model, with the sliding stock. The MP5 is one of the most famous and easily identified submachine guns in the world, sharing the pedestal with the Israeli Uzi.

Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner

M1928 Thompson Submachine Gun - The Classic Tommy Gun

The Tommy gun earned it’s reputation in the hands of gangsters in the 1930’s - back when you could buy one, full auto, from the Sears catalog for roughly $250. The M1928 model shown here has the 100-round drum magazine and wooden furniture that made it notorious in the hands of mobsters the in prohibition and depression eras in Hollywood films. The Thompson submachine gun was originally developed as the “Annihilator”, and was originally intended to fire rifle ammunition, but the limits of the design made it so it could only be manufactured firing .45 ACP.

Today we also added two new pages to the GunPorn site.

  • The first is GunPorn on Facebook which contains instructions on how to get your daily dose of gunporn while on Facebook if you are too lazy to surf on over here - as well as how to share your favourite gunporn posts with your Facebook friends.
  • The second is Image Macros - a storage page for captioned images that somehow are appropriate to the site, but that do not suit the feel of the front page (ie: they don’t focus on pretty pictures of guns). Think of them as LOLcats, but about guns.

French Military Victories

French MAT-49 9mm Submachine Gun

The somewhat heavy and more than somewhat ugly French MAT-49 submachine gun is primarily of interest because of the folding magazine well design. The magazine well and magazine can be folded forward on the gun to rest up just under the barrel. This made the MAT-49 significantly less bulky when stowed and thus easier to carry. The MAT-49 was used by the French military from it’s introduction in 1949 until it was replaced with the FAMAS 5.56mm rifle in 1979.

Oh Lusa, I’m Home!

December 26, 2007 6:00 am

LUSA A2 9mm Select Fire 9mm suppressed Carbine / Submachine gun

The LUSA A2 is a select fire 9mm submachine gun that was originally developed by a Portuguese firm for use in Portugal and adopted by a few other European countries. The design was then sold to an American firm where it is being manufactured and sold today. It is sold as a semi-automatic carbine in the civilian market, and with a select-fire trigger group almost identical to the MP5 for law enforcement and government agencies. The submachine gun definitely shows it’s Heckler & Koch roots with remarked similarities to the MP5 - which should come as no surprise as the company that originally developed it was also manufacturing H&K 21 and G3 rifles under license at the time.

Uzi does it!

Classic Uzi 9mm SMG with wooden stock & silencer

The Uzi Submachine Gun was built in the 1950’s in Isreal - the creation of a country with a  struggling economy and arms industry. Yet the design of the Uzi was one that is still recognized as one of the most robust and usable submachine guns in the world - adopted by many military, government and law-enforcement forces in over 90 countries by most accounts.

MP38 “Burp Gun”

December 18, 2007 7:27 am

German MP38 9mm Burp Gun

The MP38 was the predecessor to the MP40 made famous by Germany during WWII. The MP40 was designed as a simplified MP38 based on their experience with thousands of MP38’s used in the invasion of Poland. The MP38, in turn, was a simplification of the MP-36, which was a select-fire weapon. Both the MP38 and MP40 are full-automatic only weapons, but with a low rate of fire and very controllable recoil that allowed skilled users to squeeze off single shots when needed. Shown here with the wire stock folded, the MP38 is loaded with a 32-round magazine of 9mm Parabellum. The MP38 and MP40 were assigned primarily to paratroopers and platoon and squad leaders until late in the war.
