deadEarth Playtest Feedback

So far we've played one session with our playtest GM, SquidHead. These are my revelations on the character creation system and game itself.
- Character Creation
- I love the natural abilities / disabilities rolls. That is something truly new to gaming as far as I know. Unfortunately the age table is incredibly unbalanced. Young characters do not have enough advantages to make up for their incredibly slim skill point alotment (luckily for me I rolled up an older character). The radiations table is a riot, but definitely doesn't belong in an RPG that claims to have hard-core scientific accuracy and realism... In fact, they are quite often downright silly. Overall, I distinctly enjoyed creating my character.
- Skill Use
- I feel that the target difficulties for skill use are significantly out of whack - it's impossible for average Joe to get much done in this world... That being said, the system does work well for cinematics.
- Combat
- Wow. It's fairly complex and yet not to hard to understand after a few quick runs through. But overall I was less than impressed with the abuses the "real-time" Action Point system allows. A character with more APs than another has almost half the combat round to attack while the other character is not only unable to attack or defend, but after that character has effectively "stopped acting". I also don't like a combat system where damages are assigned instead of randomized - there is no opportunity for glancing blows and perfect lucky hits. An elbow smash is always an elbow smash...
- The World
- I like it! But while I say that, I have to point out the similarities with Gamma World, Aftermath! and the Morrow Project as well as Fallout and Fallout 2.
